Image Management Is Critical

In order to have a solution that works in your environment, part of the planning process will include the management of the VDI images. Some providers come with tools built-in (such as Citrix Provisioning Server) and some need manual management. It’s critical to get this right. Having a lifecycle process (eg: dev->alpha->beta->prod) for your golden image will help ensure not only that you don’t lose all your great work, but that the release image is the one you’re actually willing/wanting to support.

In the meantime, there are still backup considerations. Data is a critical backup consideration, of course, but don’t forget about your image library. You may not want to back up all of it, but you will surely want to capture some critical milestone images, such as the current Production image.

David Davis has a good look at backup for your virtualization practice in Top 10 Best Practices of Backup and Replication for VMware and Hyper-V. Certainly worth a look in context of your environment.
